I am a longtime reader of your website and really apreciate all the time you seem to put into it.  I also like the fact that you leave it open to discuss strategy and gather the input of others in your article posts.  I would love to play risk with you sometime online.  Which software do you typically use?

Welcome Pxer. Really glad to know more about my readers and that you enjoyed the content. Please feel free to provide your inputs. You seem to be an experienced player. After all more minds are much better than one. Indeed most of the joy in playing Risk is in analysis of happened and what you are going to do next. So this is the place that accommodates for that need.

As for software, I used to use Grand Strategy often as it had a nice clear interface. However, their site has recently gone down with no recovery so I may need to focus on something else such as Conquer Club or Lux Delux or others. The choice largely depends on the type of players in different sites and whether you feel comfortable playing with them (and not get mentally abused). What do you use for online Risk?

I hope you enjoy the site and look forward to see more about your ideas on Risk strategy in particular in subjects that I may not have covered already.

I use the Risk II game in conjunction with a server that serves as a lobby for the classic computer game called warzone (http://ewarzone.com). The game can even be downloaded from within the client for those that do not already have it. It can be a bit of a pain as the system has a few bugs. But I absolutely love the interface of the game and enjoy playing time risk with the options built in to the computer game. There is a decent crowd playing there, but nothing like many of the other sites, but it is usually easy to get a game going from 4-6 people. I like playing with the added territories of the computer game and we can get 8 players playing during peak hours. The problem I have been having there is that there can be some inexperienced players or crazy players who tend to hold grudges, but all in all I have the patience to play there and get some good games in and a few laughs at the same time.

Interesting. I don't have Risk 2, so I wont be able to experiment. But if you can get decent games then why not. As you noticed, it all depends on the quality of the players. You always find some who take it too seriously. The vast majority are good though and just want to have a decent uninterrupted game. In my experience, the drop-outs are a bigger problem because it changes the nature of the game. Those games that no one drops out and everyone's turn is ingenious and smart are usually the most memorable even if I played them 2 years ago. Getting them in regularly is not easy though.

Agreed, at the very least the endgame is very good on warzone as every game does have at least 2-3 good players. As long as I can avoid the kamikazes who sometimes play or get an experienced group to play with, the games can really be rewarding.
