I'm going to be setting up a 3 player game at my house. It'll just be set on a table somewhere and everyone will play a turn when they have a chance (so the game may take several days). I'm playing with 2 other people who are smart  but havent played Risk for years. What strategies should I employ in this situation? Usually when I play online it's with 5 or 6 players and I prefer to grab all of Australia and take Arabia and keep other players from gaining continents while I build up slowly for a strong endgame. I feel like this might not work in a 3 player game. I was thinking maybe trying to grab Australia and Africa? Or perhaps Australia and NA? I'm leaning towards Aus and Africa and trying to keep them fighting over the other continents. Anyway, can anyone recommend some 3 player strategies to me?

Cool idea. In my experience 3 player games are quite different. There are only two other players to take care of and it can easily get out of hand. I think there was some survey on this site on which continent is better to start from when playing with different number of players.

I know you shouldn't go for Australia and Asia because that's difficult even in a 3 player game. Asia and Africa is not bad, but may not be enough against others.

Keep them fight each other so you can go on to win. Easier said than done.

I think 3 player games are fundamentally different from other games because you end up balancing the game all the time. I talked about this in length in my book. In short you have to balance between not being the weakest player and not being the strongest player. I.e. you want to end up in the middle. If you become the weakest player, the chances are high that other players will gang up on you and kick you out. If you become the strongest player, the chances are that other players will target you more than normal in fear of you winning the game.

So in effect, the game is about gathering enough momentum so that you can eliminate one and damage another enough so that the remaining won’t be able to bite back.

I used to play many 3 player games a lot, and eventually we discovered that if players are very experienced, the game may never finish. Because at each stage of the game, two players get together against a third until the strongest player become weak. Then players switch sides and the cycle start all over again. You worry about another player being too strong, or you yourself become the strongest player and start to play defensively against others.

To see how you can win, look at other games when you start with 5 or 6 players and then get to 3. It seems that in these games we never have a problem and the cycle never happens. The reason is momentum. Since the beginning of the game, there has been lots of historical development, agreements, revenge, enemies and allies and so on which when you get to the 3 player stage will not stop you from finishing off what you started. In other words, player miss the chance to balance the game so that would go into a cycle, because they are so focused on their target.

So to win in a 3 player game, create momentum. That means you need to become powerful without showing it. You need to establish links with another player so when the right time comes you can exploit it. Create a history in the game.

For example, since your game is played over days, you can negotiate with other players during this time and over the back of the other. Of course you also have to anticipate against others doing this to you. Play a fair game, but with a twist. Make sure everyone has fun (I am not suggesting to backstab them, just negotiate with them), and try to win by being deceptive. The less they know about your power the better. Then unleash it with max effect.

Let us know how it plays out and what your friends  end up cooking for you.

To win a 3-player game is easy.Just try to gain Australia if possible.Let the other 2 players to fight each other. When 1 player emerge strong, weaken him then.Keeping the 'balance of power' of your emeny is the key of the victory.Remember, force is everything, keep the strong army, then you're invincible.Diplomacy is also useful if you use well(as Ehsan Hosary say)

I've always been of the opinion that you need at least 4 players to have a satisfying game. Especially if you're playing the mission version. A 3 player game can easily be over in less than an hour if one of the players achieves his mission.
In fact (and I suspect that my experience may not be unique) We once set up a 3 player game, we dealt the territories at random as we believe that makes every game different to each other.
we rolled the dice to see who went first,
one of the players won the dice so he went first, received his 4 battalians, for his 14 territories, and just went for it, Did an enormous push, conquered 10 territories and declared he was the winner as his mission was to occupy 24 territories.
Myself and the other 'player' never even got a turn.

That's funny and also shocking. I agree with you Cambus731 on 4 players being the minimum. Never liked the mission cards exactly because of this sort of sudden game endings. Just not satisfying.

Mission cards are seriously one of the worst ideas in the game. They make these games over incredibly quickly. Diplomacy in three player games? No.
