Hello, I am new to Risk. I want to start playing with my two sons ages 7 and 9. Both are very bright and enjoy playing board games.
My question is this: What version should I buy? I was at Target and noticed they had a "Vintage" version with wooden blocks and original rules and a new version with actual small soldiers. Which will enhance the playing experience? My first guess would be the new version but I would like to get your opinions. Sometimes newer is not better.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I believe to board and rules have not changed from the wood block version and the plastic soldier version. (I have a nine year old son too) having the toy soldier version definitely adds to his enjoyment of the game.
The wood block just doesn't cut it for young boys. It's like playing with die cast cars, would you want to substitute it with a wood block or a rock... just pretend its a car.

I just bought the Vintage version from Target. The rules are the original French Rules. Quite a bit different. I'm teaching my 12 year old girl. I'm starting with:
Countries determined by the cards
Free Move - any # of troops to only one country.
I'm old school, I prefer the blocks.

Well, I ended up buying the soldier version. My 7 year old and 9 year old played with myself and my brother in law. My brother in law has played for years. He is old school and has used only blocks.
The soldiers actually got a little annoying. They kept falling over and after awhile we ended up putting them into piles all over the board instead of standing them up. Also, we noticed that there were not enough single men to go around. Can that be?
We absolutely love playing the game so I think I am going to invest in the vintage edition as well. I figure I cannot lose...
Thanks for the advise. |

Glad you like it! Mission Risk is a wonderful variant I didn't have when I played as a child - then it was all about world domination. Some of the new variants (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars) are also excellent and complement rather than duplicate the original edition, if those themes interest you. |

You do know that the horses count as 5 single men and the cannons ten right? For example if you have 30 guys in Brazil, you could change that to 3 cannons or 2 cannons, 1 horse, and 5 guys.
If you are doing that then you can use a another color if you only playing with 4 players. Everyone can use the same extra colors as long as they have at least 1 color of their own on the space too. |

Just in general, i suggest Risk: Global Domination.
the cover looks like this...click on that link (or copy it into the address bar):

i'm more or less sure that this is the version most people on this site use (not to categorize anyone), and it is the traditional version as well. There are variants with different maps, rules, and looks. I like this one the most though, just an opinion. |

I like the new one. Obviously I(being a cheapskate) would choose the cheaper one. |

My suggestion, buy the newesr version of Risk and you can always change the rules to your liking by looking up the older editions online. I like the new board, its miniature soldiers and the new team rules as well as its new mission Risk feature. Truthe be told, some of the new versions of Risk including both of the Star Wars and 2210 Ad are great. Lord of the Rings has some appeal as well as Godstorm. I personally like the Star Wars version because it gives different victory conditions based on which side you are on, and Lord of the Rings Risk is similar in this aspect although not as good. My suggestion, get the new version of classic Risk and then buy a different version that is suited to your tastes. The new Transformers version, which I have not played yet may appeal to young kids as well. |
